Charging at Tesla Superchargers with a Ford Electric Car

Just over a year ago, we wrote about how General Motors and Ford electric vehicle (EV) drivers would soon have access to the Tesla charging network. Recently, some Ford drivers in our network were the first to test this new adaptor out – here’s how it went.

 

Quick Refresher 

As a reminder, all major EV automakers have now struck agreements with Tesla (not just Ford and General Motors). This year, those automakers will make adaptors available so their drivers can charge up at Tesla charging stations. That process is moving faster for some automakers and slower for others; our most recent Car Corner blog has the details. Starting in 2025, all EVs will be built with the same charging standard – the North American Charging Standards (NACS), which is essentially the Tesla standard, now available to all automakers. 

What we know for sure is that Ford Mach-E drivers in our network have received their adaptors and tried them out! 

 

First Up, Peter! 

 

 

"Back in 2021, I decided it was time to ditch our gas-guzzling minivan and go electric. We’d just installed solar panels on our house, both to save the planet and cut down on our electricity bill. Sure, electric cars cost more upfront, but the long-term savings on fuel and maintenance made them appealing. 

We explored three EV options: the Tesla Model Y, VW ID.4, and Ford Mustang Mach E. The Model Y felt too minimalistic, like a spaceship interior. The ID.4 overwhelmed us with buttons and levers. But the Mach E? It struck the right balance. Sleek on the outside, user-friendly on the inside, and a nearby Ford dealership sealed the deal. 

After patiently waiting for our Mach E (thanks, chip shortage!), we finally got it in March 2022. It’s been our trusty companion for daily drives and the every other month 300+ mile road trip to visit our daughter in college. 

Sure, we’ve faced charging challenges—broken stations, waiting times—but most trips have been smooth sailing. And now, armed with Ford's NACS adapter, we’re ready to explore new charging spots and new food options. 

Recently, I had a great experience with my Ford Mustang Mach E. After setting up Ford’s Plug & Charge setup for the Tesla network, I simply plugged in at 10% and within seconds the charging session started at 154.7 kW—the maximum charge rate for the Mach E. 

It took 38 minutes to go from 10% to 80%, all without a hitch. No issues, no drama—just a smooth charging process. We are looking forward to having more options for charging and amenities on our road trips!"

Next Up, Erik! 

"Driving back from New York City in Connecticut, I rolled into an Electrify America charging station at 8% battery. Of the five charging stalls, all were in use, with one car already waiting. There was an open Tesla Supercharger just two miles away, with ten of its twelve stalls open. I pulled in, clicked on my adapter (first time using), plug and charge worked fast (about 8 sec) and I was charging. No issues, no hassle, and it billed my credit card on file with Ford."

Looking Forward 

These Fords are just the first of many EVs that will be able to access the Tesla supercharging network in the coming months. We’re excited to see what comes up next! And we’ll borrow something Erik wrote to finish up this blog:
