Poll Finds Majority Support for Offshore Wind in Southern New England

If you read our blog on the High Cost of Saying NO to Offshore Wind, you know that offshore wind technology brings numerous benefits. Fortunately, New Englanders are increasingly aware of said benefits. Recent poll results from the Barr Foundation highlight consensus among Southern New England residents in favor of offshore wind initiatives. Conducted by Hart Research between June 7-16, this poll surveyed over 1,200 registered voters in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, showcasing strong regional support for transitioning to clean, renewable energy sources.

Key Findings from the Poll

The poll reveals that a significant majority of New England residents support the development of offshore wind projects. Residents believe that embracing offshore wind will positively impact energy prices, energy independence, job creation, local economies, and the fight against climate change. Here are some detailed insights:

Economic Benefits - Offshore wind is seen as a driver for high-paying jobs in the construction, maintenance, and operation of wind farms. It also promises long-term economic growth through the development of a new, sustainable industry.

Energy Independence - Offshore wind provides a reliable and abundant energy source that can reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels, enhancing regional energy security.

Climate Mitigation - Offshore wind holds tremendous potential to mitigate climate change by providing a substantial source of clean, renewable energy that can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

Tri-State Collaboration

There is also strong support for collaboration among Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut residents to develop and scale offshore wind projects. In Massachusetts, 77% of voters support this collaboration, followed by 75% in Connecticut and 67% in Rhode Island. This finding is particularly significant as the three states recently launched the nation’s first tri-state offshore wind procurement, calling for proposals of up to 6,000 MW of offshore wind power for the region.

The Path Forward

Given the overwhelming support for offshore wind, it is imperative for policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders to harness this momentum. To achieve this, the latest tri-state procurement must lead to successful bid selections (see bid schedule here), and we must continue to develop offshore wind projects responsibly. This includes advocating for project labor agreements, ensuring community benefits, ensuring environmental mitigation measures, and making substantial investments in the necessary infrastructure.

Conclusion

An overwhelming majority of New Englanders know that offshore wind not only combats climate change but also enhances energy independence, public health, job creation, and local economies. Government officials must leverage this public backing and implement strategic policies and investments to position New England to harness the power of offshore wind and create a cleaner, more prosperous future for all its residents.
