Evolution of Drive Green

Back when we launched the Drive Green program in 2016, there were only a handful of electric vehicles (EVs) on the market in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. When we started, we were mostly talking about the Nissan LEAF, Chevrolet Volt, and the Ford Focus Electric and a handful of Ford plug-in hybrids. The Chevrolet Bolt hadn’t even been released yet, and if you wanted a relatively long-range battery electric vehicle, you really didn’t have too many choices beyond Tesla.

At the time, our Drive Green shopping tool had some fast facts like the vehicles’ range, price, and eligibility for federal and state incentives, and we had special fixed discounted deals at local dealerships. Over the years, we added more and more vehicles, more and more specs on each car, and even created a tool to compare used EV models. But as the market grew, so did the variability within the vehicle models – now some had trims with different ranges or incentives, or AWD options, or different battery sizes. And consumers questions also evolved. Now it wasn’t just "What’s the range and how much does it cost?" but “What’s efficiency?”, and “How fast does it DC fast charge?”, and “How much can I tow?”. With 90+ EV models on the market today, and more coming, it became clear our shopping tool needed to evolve.

Our New EV Finder

Our new EV Finder tool offers consumers much more functionality than our previous shopping tool.

It includes much more information by vehicle trim, so you can see the choices within and between vehicle models.

This matters a lot, as increasingly, trims have important differences in range, price, and eligibility for various incentives.

It allows you to sort and filter by many more specs.

Are you looking for the least expensive battery-electric vehicle that gets over 250 miles of range? We got you. Are you looking for the fastest-charging vehicle that qualifies for both federal and state incentives? We got you. Need a 7-seater? Looking for AWD? Want the most efficient sedan out there to minimize your environmental impact? The EV Finder can help you narrow down your choices for all these questions.

When you add vehicles to your “Preferred Vehicles” list by checking off “I am interested”, you have the choice to submit your information to us. We’ll keep an eye on the market for you and let you know if we learn anything interesting or useful about the models you indicated an interest in!

If you’re familiar with the Drive Green program, you’ll note that we no longer feature specific dealerships. Since the pandemic, the car market has changed in pretty significant ways, and we found that our previous model wasn’t working as well as it had been before the pandemic. We think we can have the biggest impact by sharing information about available vehicle models to make it easier for consumers to compare their options. To our knowledge, there isn’t another tool with this level of detail on the different EV models.
